Helping to support cardiovascular health, CoQ10 also enhances energy production, boosts the immune system, aids in tissue repair, and reduces fatigue. It protects cells against oxidative stress which can help improve exercise performance. CoQ10 supplement also promotes brain health, supports healthy skin aging, and may provide headache relief. Coenzyme Q (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like compound that supports cellular function by acting as an antioxidant. It is an essential part of the electron transport chain’s ATP production and has shown to support membrane stability. The endogenous production may decrease with age, as shown by declining of CoQ10 concentrations.(1) CoQ10 is most often used clinically in individuals with CoQ10 deficiencies secondary to genetic mutations. While CoQ10 is not a vitamin, it does have a similar structure to Vitamin K and acts in conjunction with micronutrients in the body. Dietary sources of CoQ10 from meats and seafood provide about 3-5mg daily but is also made endogenously with support from B vitamins, Vitamin C, and trace minerals.(2) Pyridoxine deficiency is thought to be a contributing factor to CoQ10 deficiency because it acts as a cofactor.(3) In addition to its own antioxidant effects, it is also thought to enhance the antioxidant effects of Vitamin C and Vitamin E, especially in individuals with certain genotypes.(4)
